Easter

Rustic Thankful Trees were a big craft hit this Fall season, and I for one love the idea... but alas, we live in a relatively newly developed suburban area surrounded by moo cows. That means there aren't any fabulous cut or fallen branches to be had...unless of course you want to behead your lovely backyard specimens (not likely).

When I found the perfect solution and a most fabulous bit of inspiration at The Home Depot, I pretty much did a little happy dance... There is nothing more frustrating than wanting to create something, that you simply can't find the ingredients for.

So for those of you who are in the same boat I am, or just want to take things up a notch and move your rustic trees to the next level... I give you my LED Rustic Holiday Tree, perfect for thankful thoughts, holiday wishes, and just general all around wondrousness (ya pretty sure that's a word, innit?).

Before I dive right in to how I made this beauty, I would like to share a bit about The Home Depot Fall Style Guide, since I'm an official member of their blogger network, and this project was brought to you by those kind and fabulously stylish folks.. yahoo

But first let me share a bit of my project with you before you go skipping away...

...And now back to our previously scheduled programming and a bit about how I made this fab specimen! It was oh so easy!

I began this project with 4 items: an urn, a package of yard decorations, assorted zip ties (see my wreath project for details on those), and a bag of small gravel. I could have used sand as well but I have a sandbox loving monster mash kiddo so that was a no go...can you imagine the mess, eek!

I mean...do you see this face? It has trouble written all over it.

I added a bit of gravel to the urn, just enough to give my 'tree' a leg to stand on and allow it to stand up a bit.

To create my 'tree' I simply bundled all three yard picks together in varying heights and zip ties them in 3 spots. Easy peasy...

I separated out the cord that links the picks together from the cord that plugs in and simply wrapped the cord that links around the bundled tree picks to keep things under wrap.

Then I stuck my bundle into the gravel and filled it the rest of the way up, making sure to keep the cord that plugs in, running out the back of the urn.

That's it folks... super easy and extra all quick like... don't you adore a fast craft? I do!

The countdown to Easter has begun…there is no time for bunny business, ya hear? If you plan to decorate this season for this fun and crafty holiday, why not give some bunny themed projects a try? I know my monster mash holds a special place in his heart for animals (and bugs, but we shall save THAT topic for another day!) and he would love nothing more than some softy bunnies abound!

I made this Twine Easter Egg Tree using only items from my local dollar store! Love that place... so all totaled we are talking about no more than $5, assuming you already have white craft paint or primer and glue.

To make your own you will need these materials:

  • Easter Tree
  • Twine
  • Floral Moss
  • Paint
  • Glue
  • Decorative Eggs for Hanging

I began with this Easter Tree..

I painted the ceramic pot using white primer.

Once this was dry, I began to wrap the stem and branches with twine.  This is a bit time consuming, and would still look just as good without the twine wrap, but I was looking for a slightly different look than what I had with the green stems.

To wrap the twine you will need to start about an inch from the base of the stem, leaving an inch of twine loose hanging down the base of the stem.  You will then wrap the twine around itself and down toward the base of the stem to secure it.

Then start back upwards using a sparse wrapping technique.  You will worry about coverage on the way down, the wrap on the way up is simply to get you to the end of any branch so that you can work your way down more precisely.

From this image you can see my sparse wrap on the way up the branch and my more covering wrap on the way down.  Continue like this for each branch until you reach the very top and the last branch (the center stalk).  Work your way down filling in any space that the stem is showing.

To secure at the bottom, cut your twine leaving 3 inches loose, then wrap as to wrap around the stem only insert a finger (thereby creating a bit of a loop) continue around and back, then tuck your end down inside. Trim if necessary, but don't be too concerned by this since you are about to cover it with floral moss.

Using some sort of craft glue (even Elmer's will suffice) paint the top of the inside of the pot and cover with floral moss.

Arrange your branches and either hang your decorative eggs as is, or paint them Robin's Egg Blue and speckle them.

This project was so simple and has had such big impact in my Family Room, that I’m thinking it may be used at other times of the year aside from Easter and Spring! At least I am hoping so, perhaps even hopping so? Like that Easter-ish humor?

Project Image

To be sure, I wasn’t not at all sure this project was going to work out when I began, because I didn’t have the supplies I thought I needed. I was wrong, and this misadventure turned into a happy mistake because what came about was even better than I had planned, and a new lover a Decoupage medium has been gained! Can I say that I haven’t decoupaged anything in years, truly… years… So I definitely fumbled about a bit before finding my footing with this project (even more so with my next project but that is a whole other story)! But what fabulous stuff this stuff is…I know you all already know this so amuse me while I share my newfound friend in Decoupage medium!
