UPDATE: We have a WINNER!!! Kimberly Kostiew you will be receiving an email to track you down and get your shipping info! congratulations!!

I have mentioned a couple of times, briefly, that we moved last week! Well it's a true story and our new home has an abundance of ceramic tile throughout the ground floor. In truth I have a renewed appreciation of hardwood flooring now, because you guys, tile is FREEZING! Yikes...

So when we decided to move, one thing that was crucial in our timing was having the ability to move in over the course of a month. We generally do a move ourselves, and this requires time, unfortunately. With Easter, the SNAP conference (which I am speaking at, weeeee!) and a couple of birthdays, this 'extended move time' is even more important than ever. We were lucky enough to arrange for that, but with that comes a lag in furniture placement. Not to worry, there is always a fun solution to the 'no place to sleep' problem. Perhaps an Indoor Camp Out? Yes I think so...

When the kind folks over at Mohawk Flooring offered to send me a new SmartStrand rug, I jumped at the chance to cover this cold tile with something plush and fluffy. Even better that it worked to provide the perfect backdrop for our little adventure! Can you imagine camping out on ceramic tile? Not cool... or perhaps, too cool, as it were. For the 5 of you who have been reading this blog for a while, you might remember me mentioning that my 'littlest dog in the world' considers rugs to be nothing short of a very large potty pad (lesson learned with potty pad training) so the fact that this rug promises permanent lifetime stain and soil resistance to kids and pets is kind of huge... ya. Otherwise my tendency is simply to avoid rugs, which is sad... so very sad, because I LOVE rugs.

GIVEAWAY:

So guess what, one of you fabulous folks will win your own 6’ X 9’ SmartStrand bound carpet rug. Go to the contest page to enter, and be sure to select 'The Design Confidential' from the drop down menu so that you can be entered to win this particular contest that I am so excitedly hosting! SmartStrand carpet is rated #1 in consumer satisfaction… Experience it for yourself!

The contest starts Monday, March 18th and ends April 8th, so go enter here now. Please see the registration page for legal rules.

Why yes that is a vintage copy of Lord of The Flies... and why of course that is entirely appropriate reading material for a 5 year old (parenting genius here, folks...). Thankfully he can't read and has no idea of the actual subject matter of his favorite book. It might make the indoor camp out into something different entirely, and not in a good way? My amazing little monster mash guy lovingly refers to this book as FaceBook, given the large face on the cover of the book, and decidedly checks in several times a day to his 'FaceBook', just to see what's happening in the world. Just love this kid...

All was quiet on the western front with our fun little pretend adventure and so far no spills, stains, or other ephemera to deal with! Be sure to enter the giveaway, I promise you will want this prize!

DISCLOSURE: Thanks to Mohawk Flooring for sponsoring today's discussion and giveaway

I made a cute little valentine for my Monster Mash Boy. Simple and Inexpensive, the very best kind of craft, no? When I showed it to him, he was irritated with me for having used his special sticky note paper. The stuff he likes to use for clues to the treasure hunt he is constantly staging around the house. Oh well. I can see his point. Still, it's cute for a short bit and doesn't have an expiration date of the impending heart shaped holiday... nope it can stay for as long as he will leave it. I'm guessing 48 hours tops...

What about you? Any quick and simple valentine decor around your homes? Or perhaps VDay decor that doesn't need to come down when the holiday comes to a close?

Psst... I would love your support and a vote in the final round of The Homies.... Homie! Pretty Pretty Please... it means a lot to this little bloggy poo! It you don't already have an account at Apartment Therapy you will need to register but it only takes like 3 seconds and you can immediately pop over to the voting page (Best Home Project & DIY Blog) and click The Design Confidential. Seriously it's so easy and fast and means so very very much to us and the success of this site. Pretty Please

It's finally here... the bird's 3 month photos! It's becoming such an exciting thing for me to see the changes and improve my photography skills or cement my lack thereof. Last time, I thought I had really learned a thing or two about how to wrangle that kiddo into an easy posing position, only to find that I really hadn't and that 1 month of growth has made wrangling him that much harder. Boo...

Psst...To take a look back at the first 2 months, click here for the Monthly Photos category page, here for Month 1 in November, and here for Month 2 in December.

And now for the break dance breakdown, since that was what this shoot was like. eek.

The first picture is once again the most typical sort for this type of photo. Cute, soft, facing the camera (kind of) and a good representation of him. I only wish his outfit were showing a bit better because you guys... he's wearing a baby tuxedo! Could you just die? or eat him up? or die from eating him up?

This second photo isn't bad, but I much prefer 'him' in the first photo. I just adore that you can see that cutie bowtie in this one! D.I.E.

This 3rd shot is my fave because it shows what was actually happening for 99.9% of this shoot. He could not stop looking at the 2013 garland. I can hardly blame the little dude, the thing is mega sparkly.

Below is the full collage of my 'fave' photos and a collection with a closer look at him!

Below is the full collage of my 'fave' photos and a collection with a closer look at him!

Oh baby bird is getting big so fast. Why can't it just slow down for the first 5 years....

Project Image

I shared Penn's 1 month photos with you here, and now we are back with his 2 month old photos for the month of December! Yay, this baby isn't as far behind as the last one! Perhaps I'm stepping up my game a bit? Probably not.. I chose this first picture as the all around 'winner' of the bunch once again because like in his first photo shoot it has all of the typical components you might look for in a newborn shoot: he's facing the camera, no blurry body parts and his props are perfectly poised (translation = his hat isn't weird or wonky). Again I am no photographer so these shots could all be 100 times better, but I do think my skills at getting him to cooperate improved a tad over his first month... or he was simply a tad older and wiser in his second month... who knows?

I love his body position in this photo with his little wise seeming chin to hand thing, it's quite Rodin... And those little crossed legs = to die for! But his hat wasn't following directions and looks just plain ridiculous so boo...

This one, once again the least perfect in composition because the poor creature looks a tad like he's on a runaway sleigh ride down a hill, is my absolutely fave! His little face and body are the absolutely mostest... adore!

The 'best' of his monthly photos, side by side, so I can see how much older he looks for the second month... I hope he stays little forever, but since he won't at least I will have these lovely keepsakes to mark his growth!

Of course I couldn't end this post without the montage of my favorites, side by side as well. My little angel baby...

Project Image

Well it's the middle of January and I'm just now sharing these with you... surprise, surprise, eh? Just like the good little blogger that I am (ya, right), I am planning on documenting Baby Bird Penn's monthly progress for the first 2 years of his life, in a cute little photo series. Now I am no professional photographer so of course these images could be a LOT better, but I'm learning and experimenting so perhaps this will also be a photography skills montage... who knows?

I decided to torture the poor creature by dressing him and his surroundings in a theme that relates to the month's particular holiday or season, so for November it's all about Fall! Yes apparently I love to make things complicated... I couldn't just choose a chair or a fabric and call it a day. Nooooo... I had to settle on an entire scene complete with banner, decor, and matching attire.

And then I couldn't decide which picture I liked best, so I narrowed it down to my 3 faves! The first image is most likely the best all around candidate, since he is both facing the camera and isn't a blurry streak. With all the movement going on during the shoot, it's a wonder I got any decent images at all. He must take after me with all the crazy kicking and dancing around. I should show you the 'outtakes' cuz they were pretty darn funny! The image above shows his appearance best. Even though he isn't facing the camera, this one most closely resembles what he looks like in person. And of course the little tongue peeking out is also pretty typical since he eats like a starving child all day and all night.

But this last image is one of my absolute favorites because although it's not ideal for a 'cutesy newborn' picture, it's his personality all wrapped up in a one arm salute to baby-ness. When he isn't swaddled, he is in a 'one arm up' position most of the time. Even when he is swaddled, he manages to Harry Houdini one of his arms out of that straight jacket on a regular basis. Perhaps he has a future in baby arm modeling, cuz I'm sure there is a need for that.

I will be back later with his December, month 2 photos... pretty darn cute, if I do say so myself!

With the holiday season in full swing and the New Year sneaking up on us, literally as we speak, I am sure many of you will be road tripping in the next few days! This year with the arrival of baby bird, we are staying home for the holidays, but when we do travel it tends to be by car. As a gal who comes from a long line of car travelers, I consider myself quite good at the activity, but everything can get a bit tricky when traveling with a 4 year old, even for the most seasoned of road trip gurus.

As I have mentioned a million times already, I am sincerely behind on everything these days, so when KIA asked me to write an article on road trips I jumped at the chance! You see in true procrastinating fashion I have been sitting on the details of a little adventure we took a couple of months ago, and this is the perfect excuse to rewind the clock a bit and share all the lovely deets with you guys!

The month before the bird was due to arrive, we took our last family vacation, our last hurrah so to speak, as a little group of 3. It was quick and spur of the moment, but incredibly memorable and such a fabulous little getaway.

Bring on the gushy mom junk and the one million pictures of our little vacay you say? No problem!

We were travling in fairly tight quarters since I needed to bring the stroller (for me more than for the boy) and the sun was in Blakey's eyes the ENTIRE time, but it was nothing a little silky blanket over the head couldn't solve. The iPad was our hero this trip since the boy is now old enough to work the contraption on his own, and we had it loaded with plenty of read along books and preschool games... and of course a few zombie games too (the boy is obsessed...I have no idea where he gets it from)! We arrived late afternoon and had time to have a late lunch and enjoy the view from our hotel room before the boy and I enjoyed an evening to ourselves with room service (love room service). You see the hubs had a business dinner that evening since we were here, after all, to tag along on a business trip, and tag along we sure did!

We hit the beach and for the very first time I got to watch while the hubs chased the boy all by himself! It's usually a joint effort, but I was busy... you know hanging with the bird and enjoying this rather large view of him as the baby bump!

There was sand, castles, and a celebratory dance to commemorate the multi-castle event!

There may or may not have been vast amounts of ice cream consumed.... I will never tell! But there were definitely gorgeous walks along the marina and a fabulous very lengthy dinner at the most amazing Persian Restaurant. I can still imagine the food even now, it was that good! Plus, there won't be another lengthy, multi course dinner for this little family for another couple of years if the kids are in tow! This was definitely special...

After sand, surf, and turf it was time to hit the road, but not before we hit up the local theme park! This trip we decided to make a half day of it, on the way home. That would let us drive home with a tired boy who might even consider sleeping since it would be relatively dark as we drove along!

There were dolphins, and whales, and face painting... oh my!

And then we drove home to this gorgeous sight - a tired superhero and a gorgeous sunset! I can tell you the trip would have been a lot more comfy in a bigger car like the gorgeous specimen below, but hey, close proximity makes us closer right? or at least makes us cranky... either way! A big thank you to KIA for sponsoring this post and giving me a chance to gush about my kids... #kiaholiday

While the temps here in N. California are still relatively mild, I am longing for those cool crisp mornings and the changing of the leaves to take over. There is truly no more beautiful season than fall with the variety of colors that nature brings about. Are you already experiencing fall temps? If so I'm jealous... I thought I would set the tone for some fabulous fall decor and celebration! Enjoy...

I am excited to announce that I have partnered with Apartment Guide to serve as an Official Apartment Guide Decor Blogger! As an official blogger, I will be sharing articles and ideas for exploring your space, city and style.

Today's Topic is all about how to make your house guests comfortable and places to explore with your visitors that make their stay both enjoyable and memorable!

Make it Work....for your guests!

The most enjoyable aspect of staying at a hotel (for me) is knowing that regardless of how I'm feeling at any given moment, my needs and wants can be met without feeling as though I'm putting anyone out. There is no reason why your house guests should feel any differently and in fact this is the number one point of focus you should have when attempting to make your guest's stay enjoyable...not to worry this is easier to do than you might think.

Basic Needs:

During an overnight stay a guest will require certain things, and anything beyond those things is merely icing on the cake. Focus first on the basics so they are sure to be comfortable, then if you like, pull out the red carpet and go crazy...just don't forget these basics or your red carpet will be a major flop.

Sleep: This is the number one task your guests will do at your home so make this portion as flexible for as many people as possible. You should always consider the sleeping arrangements for maximum rest and minimum disturbance regardless of sleeping preferences.

  • Bedding and Climate Control - Since you won't be able to please everyone with ease on this front, having convertible options for bed coverings is crucial. That way those who are cold can cover up and snuggle in and those who get warm at night can remove coverings with ease. This might mean a sheet, blanket, down comforter, and bed spread all within arms reach while your guests are slumbering. I promise your guests will care more for their temperature than whether or not these items are all color coordinated and expensive, so don't stress...just layer. Be sure to have at least 2 pillows per person for the greatest flexibility and comfort. Guests can use them both or remove one if preferred.
  • Lighting - Be sure it's easy for your guests to read in bed if they like, or dig through their luggage to find what they need. This means you need to have easy access to lighting for them and this can easily be accomplished with table lamps or overhead lighting depending on the layout of your space. Also be sure that any windows can be adequately covered for maximum darkness if your guests are sensitive to that morning sun. A grumpy guest who didn't sleep well, doesn't work out the best for anyone.
  • Leisure - Consider that many peole enjoy a little bedtime tv watching before they hit the sack and allow them this option if you can.

Eating: Aside from sleeping and bathing this is perhaps the other major task a guest may do at your home. Make sure you provide adequate and quick options for even the pickiest of eaters. Before your guests head to bed, be sure to show them their eating and drinking options for the morning, so they can feel comfortable getting up before you, should they still be functioning on a different time zone.

  • Continental Breakfast - one of the best aspects of a hotel stay (for many) is the dining options and snack choices available throughout the day. You can accomplish the same thing in your home by purchasing just a few basics. Water, juice and milk will satisfy most daytime and morning needs for most people of the non-adult variety. Coffee in the morning is a must for 90% of your potential guests and you can create a special experience for them by simply offering some special additives like flavored creamers. Everyone loves a personalized experience. Before you head to bed yourself, be sure to set the timer on your coffee pot for a fairly early hour and lay out cups and creamers where they are easy to access. Don't make your guests hunt and gather to find what they need. Mini muffins or breakfast pastries in a variety of flavors, bagels and cream cheese, and mini cereal boxes are a fabulous way to provide some eating basics that don't require a full out cooking experience. This will fill empty tummies regardless of the hour they wake.
  • Snacks and Convertible Lunches - Have plenty of single serving snacks available for midday snacks and easy prep for day trips. Lunch meat, bread, and veg can essentially do the trick with some easy snack packs like chips, pretzels, string cheese or cookies to go along with those items. Easy peasy...
  • Dine for dinner - dining out or food prep in is a bit more tricky but should definitely be something a bit more in depth for your dinner meal. Everyone will likely be awake and gathered for this particular meal and so this is your chance to make it special...

Bathing: A crucial ingredient to a decent stay, if I do say so myself!

  • Be sure to provide plenty of towels of every variety for your guest's bathing needs. Some people like two towels while others like one smaller one... be sure to have several of each already out in plain sight for them. Have wash cloths and hand towels near sinks and a variety of bathing products for them as well... You can purchase single serving bathing products at almost every grocery store so go crazy and get them everything they may have forgotten in addition to shampoo and conditioner (toothpaste, mouthwash, shaving cream, lotion etc.). It can be mini bottle heaven friends... and will give them a little take home treat too!

Get Outdoors and Have Some Fun:

Leisure: Outside of the stay in your place, your guests may want to enjoy a bit of sightseeing and get to know your town. The best way to do this is to get to know what your town and it's surrounding areas are known for. In northern California we are known for many things, both historical and outdoorsy, but mainly we are a commuter town meaning we are a couple of hours drive from dozens of spectacular places.

  • Locally -  we have several 'old towns' within a 20 mile radius of here, including the very well know historic Old Sacramento on the River Delta. A short days adventure walking the wooden planked sidewalks and exploring the Railroad Museum are always fun for the family and our friends. Old Folsom is another short day adventure walking through the shops and eating at the local restaurants alongside the American River. The network of rivers and lakes in this area, afford folks outdoor adentures till their hearts are content. From water sports and scenic rides to hiking or relaxation, there is a bit of something for everyone here.
  • All in a days work - If you draw a radius around Sacramento covering about 90 miles you will be amazed at the number of adventures within your grasp. We are a short hour and half drive from the amazing city of San Francisco, Marin County with Stinson Beach and Muir Woods for the outdoorsy types, Lake Tahoe for those who might enjoy some time at the lake in the summer or a bit of gambling and winter sports when the temperatures drop, the Gold Country towns of Coloma, Sutter Creek, and Murphy's with their spectacular adventures in antiques, caves to explore and gold panning, and the Wine Country... well who can forget that. With Napa being the most well known followed by Sonoma, Amador and El Dorado County, this area is bookended by amazing wine varieties and fabulous winery tours.

Today's Topic is all about how to choose the right neighborhood or city to live in, how I chose my own neighborhood, and some of the important factors in making the best decision for my family (or yours).

My family moved to my current home a little over 2 years ago, and I'm still glad about our choice of residence. I have a tendency to become restless in my surroundings when something is amiss, but I'm happy to say that so far, it hasn't happened.

The following are just a few of the key ingredients that went into finding my perfect space, and things you need to consider when finding yours:

  • Cost
  • Size
  • Amenities
  • Education
  • Proximity

Cost: Determining your monthly budget is absolutely crucial in choosing a neighborhood. Right off the bat, this factor alone will determine your possibilities. My family's budget was pretty limited this last go around, and so my options were essentially limited to either newly developmed neighborhoods in previously undeveloped areas, smaller or 'not so ideal' existing space in a few favorable areas, or more suitable existing spaces in less favorable areas.

It didn't take much to get me out there looking for places in neighborhoods I had never even visited, and wasn't much of a decision at all when I was able to physically compare the new, well equipped communities that had popped up around town for a lot less cost, to the more trendy infill areas with virtually no space to show for your budget, and no amenities to speak of.

For more tips on choosing the right neighborhood: How to “test drive” a city

Space: How much space does your family require? At that point in my adult life 2 years ago, when we were looking for a new place we were a daily family of 3 and a small dog, with an occasional family of 5 or 6. This expandable family dynamic of ours made for a bit of a tricky arrangement for rooms we might require, at any given moment, and certainly helped seal the deal on which neighborhoods we were able to peruse. Since the older more established areas in and around my city tend to have smaller more historic spaces and don't tend to have even a remote possibility for 5 rooms or places to slumber, on the best of days, this essentially rules them out for our current living condition needs.

Amenities: What do you need to be comfortable in your space? For me this is a tall order... I need in unit laundry facilities, a decent amount of storage space, a kitchen area that isn't closed off from the remaining living space (I need to have a visual on the kiddo at any given moment), a living and dining area separate from a family room (in other words a great room would not work for me as the only family living space or I would need to budget an off site storage unit), a yard or relatively functional patio area, easy access to parks and walking trails, and as any female might suggest a bath in the Master Suite is a big bonus... no, scratch that...a requirement!

For more tips on choosing the right place to live: How to feel at home in a new city.

Education: Do you have school aged kids you need to consider? With my little man fast approaching pre-school age, the nearest elementary school was something that needed to be considered. Is it in a decent school district and well funded? Does it have a decent success rate and focus on education? Are there extracurricular activities available and what are they? What is the typical level of parental involvement for the kids?

I was lucky to find that several of the 'newer' developments were in good school districts with newly built school facilities and were comprised of young families that were focused on education and very involved in their kid's daily activities. This definitely helped me feel comfortable that many of the areas we were looking at, would be good in the long run as well as comfortable in the short term with my list of growing amenity requirements.

For more tips on family friendly living: Best cities for families

Proximity: How far from civilization is the neighborhood in question and how far are you willing to travel? If a daily commute is something you deal with, knowing your drive time limit is crucial. While many families choose to stretch this in order to find a decent place, my personal belief is that this factor can considerably lower the standard of living for both parents and kids. If you choose a neighborhood more than an hour from your home, and there are traffic conditions to contend with, you will have substantially longer days, more restless nights, and a lot less time to spend with each other. For me, this is far from ideal and isn't worth the sacrifice. Finding a neighborhood that suits my needs and is close enough to a freeway system or roads that will get me from one place to another easily, is important.

Equally important is the having the ability to run to the store for something last minute, without having to trek 20 minutes into town to get the job done. With kids in tow, a night time run is sure to occur, and dragging them out at all hours isn't preferable. If your partner is stuck in traffic during rush hour and you are the only remaining hope for that very necessary dose of fever reducer, and you have to pile everyone in the car for 2 hours to get things taken care of, you can be sure there will be some irritated and uncomfortable parties involved in the end. Proximity may seem trivial in the beginning, but it becomes quite the heavy weight contender as time goes on.

Separating out your needs by 'must haves' and 'really wants' will help you weed through the options and find your ideal neighborhood and ultimately your ideal place. Be smart and think ahead and you will likely not have to move again in 6 months time, for problems you didn't foresee.
