Lumber Used
As you can see in the pre-stain photo, I used 2-2x4s instead of a 4×4 for each leg and then made a gap in the outer leg to allow the side rail to rest on top of the 2×4. I had to alter the dimensions somewhat but I felt this would greatly improve the strength of the side rail connection.
